All Together Now – Recycling just got easier in Statesville thanks to a new recycling station in the parking lot of the Statesville Police Department on Sharpe St.  There, citizens can mix all their recyclables together including some new items – cardboard and all colors of glass.

The City will contract with Benfield Sanitation Services to provide the container and empty it as needed.  Benfield opened a materials recycling facility (MRF) last year that allows them to accept recycling materials all mingled together.

The complete list of items accepted at the new recycling unit is:

Cardboard: empty and flattened (no boxes with food debris such as pizza boxes)
Glass: all colors of jars and bottles
Plastic Containers: Recycle #1-7 (mostly beverage, food and detergent, but no Styrofoam or plastic wrap and bags.  Look for the number on the bottom of the container to see if it is acceptable.)
Mixed Paper: magazines, phone books, newspapers and inserts, mail (junk and personal), computer paper, flyers, wrapping paper (no foil or plastic wrap) beverage cartons and food boxes (remove plastic liner and no food soiled paper, please)
Cans: clean tin and aluminum food and beverage cans

The single stream recycling container will be available beginning Tuesday, March 20.  Discarded items can be bagged or loose.  The City’s curbside recycling program will remain the same.

There’s no need to fear the voices you might hear coming from the Fourth Creek Burying Ground in downtown Statesville on Saturday, May 12.

Statesville is embarking on an effort to create a graphic identity and marketing strategy to promote the community and its partners.

We need your help.

A public meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Statesville Civic Center where you can share your ideas on Statesville's identity.

A "brand" is a promise that is made to a consumer that speaks to the unique value and characteristics of the product.  Just like a soft drink or shoe company, this would apply to a community as well.  Therefore, a community brand would present the unique characteristics and values that separate a community from others within the region.

The Statesville brand will not be simply a logo, but rather a graphic identity with a unique style, theme, palette, typography, and overall message that is applied to a broader system that will position Statesville as a special place.  The goal is to create a seamless marketing package that will promote the community and its assets to residents, visitors and business.

The public is invited to join in the celebration of the new greenway section at 4 p.m. this Monday, Oct. 11. Ceremonies will be held on a section of the greenway located in the Statesville Soccer Park off Simonton Rd.

A $550,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation funded the paving of the 2.2-mile greenway section and the construction of three bridges. The City of Statesville oversaw the engineering and planning of the construction and administration of the grant.

Guided tours on foot or by golf carts will be available at the opening. The public is encouraged to bring their walking shoes, bicycles, strollers and wagons to enjoy the beautifully landscaped trail. Maps of the greenway system and access points will also be available.

Parking for the grand opening is available in the first parking lot in the Soccer Park. In case of rain, ceremonies will be held in the picnic shelter adjacent to the parking lot.

Statesville is currently meeting it’s withdrawal reductions.  We do not have to go to any restrictions or even activate our water management plan at this time. We will start withdrawing water from the South Yadkin this week to meet our withdrawal reduction requirements. Flows in the South Yadkin at this time are more than adequate to make up  what is not withdrawn from the Catawba.

In Stage 1, water users are encouraged to voluntarily reduce lawn and landscape irrigation as well as residential vehicle washing. Local water suppliers will provide additional guidance on voluntary reductions for their jurisdictions as appropriate.

“Recent rains were very beneficial, but not enough to restore the Basin’s long-term streamflow and storage to normal conditions,” said Ed Bruce, Duke Energy, CW-DMAG coordinator.

Two of the three LIP drought indicators (triggers) are in or below Stage 1: Water storage in the Basin’s lakes has declined to 86 percent of Target Storage, and stream flows that feed the reservoirs are well below normal.

“Streams and lakes were not fully replenished by the recent rains,” said Rock Hill Public Services Administrator Jimmy Bagley.  “Citizens can help by continuing to use water wisely in their homes, yards, schools and businesses.”

The CW-DMAG members have been monitoring conditions closely since the Basin entered a Stage 0 drought watch in early August. According to the process established by the LIP, members receive regular updates and meet at least monthly until conditions return to normal.

Statesville Police Chief Tom Anderson was all smiles Thursday with the announcement that veteran police Captains Eddie Rimmer and Mike Watts have been selected as Statesville’s Assistant Police Chiefs.  “This is a historic day for the Statesville PD,” said Anderson.  “Not only because this is the first time Statesville will have two assistant police chiefs, but because of the high caliber of officers who are taking on these newly created positions.  I am very excited about this selection.”

Asst. Chief Rimmer is assigned to oversee Administration and Asst. Chief Watts now leads Department Operations.  Together, they have more than 40 years of experience with the Statesville Police Department.

Statesville City Council approved the creation of the two positions earlier this month after Assistant Chief Bill Halliburton resigned to accept the Chief’s position with the Albemarle Police Department.

The promotions are effective Nov. 17, 2011, and come after what Anderson described as, “a lengthy competitive interview process” that involved six captain candidates, all from within the Statesville Police Department.  Anderson and Assistant City Manager Lynn Smyth facilitated the interview process.  “We are very pleased that all of the candidates did exceptionally well and reflected a command staff that is well trained and experienced.  I look forward to our future together,” said Anderson.

Statesville citizens will get a chance to walk throughout the newly renovated City Hall during a public open house on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2-5 p.m.  For more than a year, the 120-year old building has undergone major renovations to restore its historic character and make space for City offices.

On Feb. 5, guests will enter on the first floor from either entrance.  Handicapped access is available from the parking lot entrance.  On the first floor, visitors will be amazed at the openness of the lobby area.  They can view historic photographs and City Hall-related memorabilia provided by local historian Steve Hill. They can stand in the office of Statesville’s first postmaster, A.D. Cowles, and see where the Statesville Planning Department will soon be relocated.  Victorian-era refreshments will also be served.

The basement can be accessed by stairs or the elevator.  Among the maze-like hallways and fire department offices found on this floor, guests will see unique architecture and the original granite staircase.

Groups will leave every five minutes from the monumental stair on the first floor to tour the second and third floors. The Council Chamber has been completely refurbished.  While walking through the rooms, guides will provide information about the history of the building as well as details on the renovation project.  In several rooms, actors portraying various characters from the 1890s will delight visitors with their stories and anecdotes about the life of the building.

Although the third floor will not be occupied at this time, the rooms have been refurbished and guests will see the area used in the George Clooney movie, “Leatherheads”.

In addition to the formal ceremony, a ribbon cutting will take place Monday, Feb. 6, at 6:30 p.m., prior to the City Council meeting in the City Council chambers.

Statesville employees will begin moving into the building the week of Feb. 6.  However, period furniture pieces and refinished furniture original to the 1892 building have been placed throughout the building.

There is no fee to attend the Open House.  Visitors are encouraged to sign up for a tour when they arrive at the open house.  For more information, call 704-878-3586.

Statesville City Hall will show off its newly renovated lobby during the April 20 Art Crawl with a special exhibit of paintings by Statesville native Robert Gantt Steele.

In 1995, Steele painted more than 20 paintings depicting the history of Statesville.  The paintings were sold at auction and the proceeds were used to purchase, move and restore the Statesville depot, which was set to be torn down.  As many as 13 of these paintings and other Statesville paintings by Steele will be on display this Friday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on the first floor of City Hall.

“We are extremely grateful to the owners of the paintings who are loaning them to us for this occasion,” said Statesville Mayor Costi Kutteh.  “The sampling we have gathered is going to be spectacular.  And the venue in which we showcase them is magnificent as well.”

Steele, who is a member of the family-owned business J.C. Steele & Sons, grew up in Statesville and was trained as an architect at NCSU and at the University of California, Berkeley.  He studied art in Austria as a Fulbright scholar and is now a renowned artist living in California.  He has never forgotten his roots, assisting the fundraising efforts of the Statesville Depot and Fort Dobbs preservation campaigns by donating paintings from which prints were made and sold.

Steele is unable to attend the event.  Although all of the original paintings will not be on display, prints of them, along with the narratives Steele wrote about each painting, have been framed and will be part of the exhibit.  These prints will be on sale through GG’s Art Frames Gifts in Downtown Statesville.

City Hall is just one of the dozens of venues hosting as many as 80 artists for the April 20 Art Crawl. It is self-guided and attendees can begin at any location.  Sidewalk markers will indicate a participating business and a program guide is available at all locations.
